EAL 4750 Engaging Critically with Writing
15 credits Semesters: You can choose to do this module in Semester 1 or in Semester 2

This module gives students the opportunity to explore and develop writing in different genres by studying the grammar and vocabulary in context.  Students examine varieties of English from a historical and cultural perspective and develop their writing in different genres including cyber communication, work-related texts and print media.  They read and discuss texts and analyse the relationship between audience, purpose and content. Students also examine issues of fluency, clarity and correctness. The module also focuses on personal and work-related writing tasks both in and out of class and features regular feedback from the class tutor and from peers. The module is also offered as a non-credit bearing module: EAL 4820.

EAL 4760 Exploring Spoken English
15 credits Semesters: You can choose to do this module in Semester 1 or in Semester 2

This module is designed for students who want to improve their listening and speaking skills in English in both formal and informal settings. Students will develop strategies for active listening and learn to deal with unfamiliar language. Seminars will consider the importance of audience, purpose, and non-verbal signals in a variety of situations. Students will have opportunities to participate in workshops in which they will be involved in activities such as discussions, role-plays and class presentations. The class tutor will monitor these activities and give feedback on features of spoken English including levels of formality, prosodic features and lexical appropriateness. It is also offered as a non-credit bearing module EAL 4830.

EAL 5600 Morphology of British Culture

15 credits Semesters: You can choose to do this module in Semester 1 or in Semester 2

This module is designed to introduce advanced non-native speakers of English to British cultural history from the late Victorian period to the present. Key aspects covered will include: the British understanding of culture, the discourses of Empire, British culture during the World Wars, the class system, post-war British popular culture, the migrant experience in post-war Britain, contemporary discourses of Britishness in relation to multiculturalism, the European Union and devolution. It is also offered as a non-credit bearing module EAL 5610.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does it start?
Registration is open throughout the Module Registration period. These modules begin in Week 2 of the term, apart from EAL 5600, which begins in Week 1.

How to Register:
A registration form can be obtained from your department’s Erasmus Coordinators for Associate (Erasmus & Study Abroad) students. After selecting the modules please bring this form to Room 1.24 in Bancroft Building for the Course Tutor to sign and for our office to note down your registration details.  This completed module registration form will then have to be taken to the Study Abroad Officer in Queens Building, Room E09 who will register your modules on My SIS.

 
Start and End dates for credit bearing modules for associate students:
For Semester 1
: Classes commence from the second week of term in Semester 1 apart from EAL 5600, which starts in the first week.
For Semester 2: Classes Commence from the second week of term in Semester 2 apart from EAL 5600, which starts in the first week.
